Chainsaw Wood Carving

useful tools to make

Many artists are discovering the beauty of chainsaw wood carving. This art form is an extension of their skills and often uses a mix of traditional and modern carving techniques. Crager and his wife, Tracie Dugas, have carved beautiful wood creations since the 1960s. Between shows, they often try to get home as many times as possible to help with staining and painting. His daughters have become involved in his work, sometimes helping with painting and staining. They also prefer white pine as it is lighter in weight and less likely crack.

Rich Anderson

Rich Anderson is an Oregon chainsaw wood carver. Anderson, a Poughkeepsie-native, lives with his family. Anderson holds several degrees in the fine arts and teaches art to children in the Pre-K to fifth grades. Anderson has created many sculptures on Long Island, and even one in Colorado. His pieces include standing trees as well as smaller pieces such corn ear sculptures. He is currently working on a sign to Youngs Farm in Riverhead.

The $400 chainsaw lets him create intricate sculptures that would have taken days to chisel from a tree. Chainsaw wood carving is also a greener choice than chisels and hammers because they are recyclable. Anderson markets his business via word of mouth. Anderson carved a massive cobra for Wading Rive and a great-blue heron as a mechanic.

Tracie Dugas

Tracie Dugas's impressive work as a chainsaw woodcarver is evident in the life-size wizard she carved out of wood. The 49-year-old woman lives in Clare (Nova Scotia), between Digby and Yarmouth. The chainsaw woodcarver was one of many artists who presented their work during Canada Day Weekend in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Although tourists flooded Sydney's waterfront, the dry spell allowed locals to take in the view of the chainsaw artist and enjoy the waterway.

Tim Crager

Tim Crager did not consider himself an artist. His skills with a chainsaw were only averagely proficient. But his passion for carving led to a full-time occupation six years later. Crager has sold over $1 million in carvings throughout the Eastern U.S. Crager was born in Garrett, Eastern Kentucky. He grew up watching the chainsaw wood carver at his work. The artist's style fascinated him so he called his boss one day and gave his two week notice.

Crager prefers white pine when it comes to wood choice. It's readily available from tree trimming businesses. Many people prefer different types of wood. Crager will follow the grain of the wood to create his pieces. Although Crager is usually clear about what he intends to do before he starts a project, he can change his mind at any time. The creation of small projects takes only an hour. However, larger carvings can take from 33 to 36 hours.

Don Scoggins

Don Scoggins can be described as a chainsaw woodcarver. His wood carvings include detailed animals and often include multiple animals. His creations have attracted attention from tourists and neighbors alike. The chainsaw sculptures are so large and detailed that they adorn the entrance and coffee shop at Blue Arrow Farm. Blue Arrow Farm is owned by Don Oriolo, who is also the manager and artist of Felix the Cat. Kacie Oriolo, Don Oriolo's wife, met during a New Jersey State Fair chainsaw competition.

The 15-year-old wood carver and winner of the award was inspired to start carving at a Reedsport competition. Although he was an experienced wood carver, he had never used one before. FAQ

Is it difficult to start my woodworking business?

It's not easy to start your own woodworking business. There are lots of legal requirements and regulations that you'll need to follow. You don't have to go through all that hassle of setting it up. Many people opt to join existing businesses instead. This way, you only need to pay membership fees and taxes.

Where do I start with woodworking?

You can learn the most effective way to build furniture by actually building it. While you will need tools, mistakes are inevitable, but you will learn the ropes if you persevere.

First, choose a project you would like to complete. You could make something as simple or complex as a box. Or you could build a whole entertainment center. Once you've settled on a project find a local skilled woodworker. Ask your local woodworker to help you determine the right tools for you and where they are located. Perhaps you could ask if there is someone else who does this type of work.

Are there any other things I should know regarding woodworking?

It is easy to underestimate the amount work involved with furniture construction. Finding the right wood is the hardest part. It can be hard to choose from the many types of wood that are available.

Another issue is that wood does not have the same properties. Woods can warp, split, or crack over time. Before purchasing wood, you should consider these factors.

How can I tell what kind of wood I am working with?

Always read the label when purchasing wood. The label should detail the wood species, its moisture content and whether it has been treated or not.

How do I choose the right tools for me?

It's important that you consider your needs and preferences while shopping for tools. Do you prefer metal or plastic handles? What size of nails and screws do your hands use most? Do you prefer hand tools over power tools?

How To

How to join two pieces of wood together without nails

Woodworking is a favorite hobby. You can make useful items from wood with your hands, which is both relaxing and fun. Sometimes you may want to join two pieces together of wood without using nails. This article will demonstrate how to do so to preserve the beauty of your woodwork.

Before you can join the wood pieces together, you need to remove any rough edges. You don't want any sharp corners to cause problems later. Now you can start gluing the boards together.

If you are working with hardwood, only one side should be glue. For softwoods like cedar and pine, glue should be applied to both sides. Apply the glue to the boards and press them down until they are securely attached. After applying the glue, let dry the boards before proceeding to the next stage.

After you have glued your boards, drill holes where you want to insert screws. Depending on the type of screw that you use, the size of these holes will vary. If you plan to use a 1/2 inch wood screw, drill a hole at least 3/4 inches in depth.

After drilling the holes, you can drive the screws into your board's backside. Be careful not to hit the front surface of the board, or else you'll ruin the finish. Avoid hitting the screws' ends too often when driving screws. This will avoid splitting in the wood's ends grain.

Protect your finished project now. You have two options: seal the whole furniture piece or just the top. You want it to last years, so you can use any product. Examples include oil-based varnishes and polyurethanes, shellac, lacquer and others.

These products can generally be found in any home improvement shop. You should make sure you are getting the right type for the job. Remember that some finishes can be toxic, so you should not use them indoors. So, always wear protective gear when handling them.
